Director of Telecel Cash and Digital Transformation, Philip Amoateng, has underscored the importance of digital infrastructure, innovation, and technology as fundamental pillars for the continent’s economic growth and integration.

Speaking on how Africa can leverage digital infrastructure, innovation and technology to connect the continent on day two of the Africa Prosperity Dialogues 2025, Mr Amoateng said there is a need for strategic investments in technology with a unified approach to drive the continent’s shared prosperity.

“We live in a time where the future of our continent is being shaped not only by the physical roads we build, but by the invisible networks that power our economies, our communities, and our relationships.

“These are the digital highways of technology, which is now the lifeline of our socio-economic development,” he said, speaking to an audience of business leaders, industry stakeholders, government officials, private sector stakeholders and influencers from across the continent.

Mr Amoateng believes that Africa’s prosperity is closely linked to its ability to harness digital infrastructure and connectivity to advance the African Union’s Agenda 2063, the continent’s blueprint for inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development.

With over 300 million people still without internet access, making the continent one of the least connected in the world, Mr Amoateng said without reliable and affordable access to the digital space, millions of Africans remain locked out of the global economy.

“We need to prioritise investments in broadband networks, fibre-optic cables, and 5G infrastructure to close the connectivity gap, specifically in rural and remote areas. This expansion will ensure that every African can access the opportunities of the digital economy.”

Organised by the Africa Prosperity Network and in partnership with the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) Secretariat, APD 2025 was on the theme “Delivering Africa’s Single Market through Infrastructure: Invest. Connect. Integrate.

The three-day gathering convened Heads of State, political leaders, private sector stakeholders, industry captains and financial players to forge partnerships, bridge Africa’s infrastructure gaps, and drive economic integration through strategic investments.

Citing the success of mobile money interoperability, which has transformed financial inclusion across sub-Saharan Africa, through the power of cross-collaboration, Mr Amoateng called for tech integration across sectors like agriculture, healthcare, education, and finance.

With more than 60% of Africa’s population under the age of 25, he stressed the need to create an environment that empowers young Africans to solve real-world challenges using digital tools like artificial intelligence.

He also shared an example of Telecel Ghana’s efforts through its Connected Learning programme, which has already exposed over 20,000 children to digital technologies like AI and robotics.

“We are equipping the next generation with the skills to not only understand AI but to build AI solutions from scratch. This ensures we have the right talent to drive Africa’s digital future,” Mr Amoateng said.

Telecel Cash director pushes investment in connectivity and innovation to unlock Africa’s digital future

Obo-Nai shared multiple examples of how AI is transforming connectivity in emerging markets and helping Telecel Ghana optimise its operations while maintaining a focus on environmental and societal impact.

“It is important that we adopt technological enhancements that make us more efficient while protecting the environment in which we operate. We also need to ensure that we are building businesses that are fit for the future. If we build an organization that doesn’t take care of its environment and society then that business will not survive long term.”

Ing. Obo-Nai shared insights into how the connectivity industry can leverage AI to enhance network efficiency and improve customer experience, but most importantly, ensuring these advancements are sustainable.

“The use of AI to predict when maintenance is due, predict hardware failures and reduce service disruptions means less operational challenges, less movement of engineers across sites, efficient energy management leading to less carbon emissions, hence protecting our environment. AI can help to determine locations where we can deploy solar systems as we move to more renewable energy sources.”

Telecel Ghana has incorporated AI to create personalised data and voice packages for customers, regardless of their socio-economic status, furthering inclusivity. Additionally, through the Telecel Foundation’s Connected Learning programme, AI is also being used to introduce over 20,000 children to digital technologies, including robotics, empowering future generations with the skills necessary to thrive in the AI-driven economy.

As part of the conversation about how businesses can thrive amid growing global challenges, Ing. Obo-Nai stressed the importance of building ‘future-fit’ companies.

“To build a resilient business, it’s critical that we meet the needs of today without compromising the future. We need to focus on climate change, resource conservation, and social equity. If society and the environment fail, businesses will fail too.”

Together with other speakers including Andy Poppink, CEO of JLL Global Markets and Mary de Wysocki, Chief Sustainability Officer of Cisco, the discussions explored how technology, sustainability, and equity intersect in shaping the future of the global economy.

https://thebftonline.com/2025/02/03/telecel-ceo-speaks-on-ai-sustainability-at-world-economic-forum/

The Chief of Staff at Telecel Group, who also oversees the Africa Startup Initiative Programme (ASIP), Eleanor Azar, has called for increased investment and consultative support to strengthen Ghana’s growing tech startup ecosystem.

“Ghana has immense talent and potential in the tech start-up space. We are happy to have supported 40 start-ups for the four cohorts of ASIP who are tackling local problems in their communities.

However, the reality is that startups still face barriers that prevent them from scaling, including access to sufficient capital and the strategic advice to grow and navigate challenges in their markets. These are critical gaps that need to be addressed,” she said.

In her keynote address at the opening of the Tech in Ghana Conference in Accra, she shared insights on ASIP, a corporate social responsibility initiative by Telecel Group, to set the tone for two days of discussions and showcase of Ghana’s talent in technology and innovation.

She highlighted the significant strides that ASIP has made in the last four years to accelerate the growth of high-potential tech startups across Africa through a blend of funding, mentorship, and networking opportunities, with a focus on underserved markets in countries including Ghana.

On the theme: “Security, Synergy and Storytelling”, the two-day conference and exhibition brought together entrepreneurs, investors, tech leaders, diplomats and policy makers across Ghana to discuss the future of digital innovation on the continent.

About ASIP

Since its inception in 2019, ASIP has provided financial and mentorship support to a diverse range of startups through its global network of over 3000 mentors and $750,000 in total benefits.

The beneficiary startups, with 70 per cent being women-led, have gone on to create about 4,000 jobs in the last four years.

Call for collaboration

Ms Azar advocated for collaborative efforts and partnerships to nurture the growth and innovation of African early-stage businesses, urging government bodies, investors, and corporate entities to work together to create a more conducive environment.

“We believe that sustainable collaboration between the private sector, government, and international partners will help create an enabling and supportive environment where startups grow and contribute meaningfully to the economy.

These startups are within the communities and know the existing problems better and their solutions can help tackle the challenges the communities face, if given the right investment and advisory support,” she added.

She said through ASIP, Telecel Group aims to provide African startups with access to both local and international investors, mentorship and capacity building programmes that can help them scale and compete globally.

She pointed out that ASIP has already seen success with several startups from the four cohorts, and it is committed to make a bigger impact in Ghana’s rapidly growing tech ecosystem.

https://www.graphic.com.gh/business/business-news/ghanas-startup-ecosystem-needs-more-investment-advisory-support-telecel-group-asip-director.html

For seven years, Telecel Ghana has been a steadfast partner of Asanteman. Each year, the telco dedicates an entire month to celebrating the rich culture, golfing talents, community health, local businesses and vibrant community spirit of the region.

Led by the Enterprise Business Unit, Telecel Ashanti Month is a fusion of sports, culture, and community outreach, which has become a hallmark of the company’s commitment to the Ashanti Region. With this year’s edition held in November, the series of golf, customer and social impact activities touched the lives of many in the capital, Kumasi and beyond.

Asantehene Open: An annual display of golfing excellence

At the heart of Telecel Ghana’s Ashanti Month celebrations is the prestigious Asantehene Open – a golf tournament that brings together sports enthusiasts, business leaders, and cultural ambassadors from across Africa to compete in the men and ladies’ championships, handicap, support and sponsors categories.

As the headline sponsor for seven consecutive years, the telco has played a pivotal role in elevating the tournament to international standards, with this year’s event being another resounding success, attracting 270 amateur and professional golfers from across African 10 countries including Ghana.

Each year, the Asantehene, His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II tees-off in a ceremony to set the ball rolling for the championships. This year, the Ashanti King was joined by Telecel Group Board Chair, Nicolas Bourg, Telecel Ghana CEO, Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai and the Chair of the Management team of the Royal Golf Club, Kwesi Attah-Antwi for the ceremonial tee-off.

“The Asantehene Open is more than just a golf tournament,” said Patricia Obo-Nai, CEO of Telecel Ghana. “It’s an opportunity to appreciate the hundreds of businesses and countless people in the region who use our services. We are proud to be associated with this prestigious tournament and to contribute to its continued growth year on year.”

At the end of the 4-day tournament, Asantehene hosted the annual royal dinner to award outstanding golfing competitors with trophies in all categories. Ernest Herman received the grand trophy in the Men’s Championships, Kwame Selorm Boampong won the Men Handicap category while Samira Kangoute was awarded the champion in the Ladies Championship.

Telecel Ghana’s Albert Achiaw came second in the Sponsors B category, receiving the award for Overall Runner Up in the group.

The success of the 67th Asantehene Open is a testament to the ever-growing influence of golf in Ghana and the critical role that corporate and traditional leaders like the Asantehene play in promoting the sport.

Customer Engagement

Asanteman is celebrated for its industrious and entrepreneurial spirit. Throughout the Ashanti Month, Telecel Ghana engages with its customers in meaningful ways through a series of market activations and customer visits. These activations, which take place in various markets and high traffic areas across the region, provide Telecel customers with exclusive offers, promotions, and interactive experiences to boost their businesses.

The telco’s senior management team also take the opportunity to visit local enterprise clients and get firsthand feedback on how Telecel Ghana can continue to improve its services.

“Our customers are at the heart of everything we do. Visits to their businesses are not only about maintaining relationships, but also to deepen our understanding of their operations, challenges and needs. These interactions enable us to deliver tailored solutions that drive our mutual growth,” said Tawa Bolarin, Director of Enterprise Business.

A commitment to community health

Ashanti Month activities are not limited to the fairways and greens of the Royal Golf Park, Kumasi. The Telecel Ghana Foundation organises several community outreach initiatives that add value and make a lasting impact on the lives of the people in the region.

One of the most anticipated initiatives is Healthfest, a free medical screening for a wide range of health checks such as blood pressure, blood sugar, malaria, hepatitis B, HIV, typhoid, weight and general health consultations. This year’s, held in Ashtown, benefitted a total of 483 people with 300 people getting their National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration, replacement and renewal completed.

Additionally, Telecel Ghana Foundation made a tangible difference in the lives of indebted patients at the Kumasi South Hospital, burdened by unpaid medical bills. Through its Homecoming initiative, the Foundation helped settle the outstanding medical costs of 15 cash-strapped patients, ensuring that they can receive treatment and be discharged for conditions including skin burns, car accidents, surgeries, chest infections and birth complications among others.

The Foundation donated medical supplies such as gloves, fetoscopes, bedsheets and toiletries to the mother and baby unit of the hospital.

“We believe that healthcare should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic background,” said Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, Head of Foundation, Sustainability and External Communications at Telecel Ghana. “Our Connected Health Initiatives are designed to improve access to quality healthcare and strengthen community health.”

Empowering Women Entrepreneurs

One of the standout initiatives of this year’s Ashanti Month is the digital and financial skills training organised to empower women in the informal sector. The workshop focused on equipping 140 women, including hairdressers, dressmakers and agribusiness owners, with the tools they need to manage and promote their businesses more effectively, access digital services, and understand the fundamentals of financial literacy.

The skills training forms part of Telecel Foundation’s broader effort to support the informal economy, where women make up a significant portion of the workforce, by providing them with the tools to grow their businesses and build more sustainable livelihoods. At the end of the training, each participant received a smart phone with a special Telecel package of 2.5GB data every month for a year.

This year’s special guest, Board Chair of Telecel Group, Nicolas said “Having a good understanding of digital tools and financial management skills will help you connect with a wider customer base through online platforms, expand your market reach and assist you in making informed financial decisions to secure your business’ future.”

Building on the inroads

Telecel Ghana’s partnership with Asanteman is a cornerstone of the telco’s community engagement strategy. The partnership demonstrates a keen understanding of the importance of local engagement and the value of integrating cultural heritage into business.

Looking ahead, this partnership is poised to be a catalyst for sustainable growth and development in the region. As Telecel Ghana continues to leverage its resources and the wisdom of Asantehene’s leadership, it looks forward to another year of sports, culture, and most importantly, giving back to the region that has helped shape the company’s success nationally. The future is bright as both Telecel and Asanteman chart a path forward, rooted in shared values and a vision for a digitally connected and economically empowered region.

https://www.peacefmonline.com/pages/local/news/202411/512973.php

In celebrating Ashanti Month, the Telecel Ghana Foundation has organised two of its flagship health initiatives, Healthfest and Homecoming in Kumasi to support the healthcare and well-being of residents and communities in the region.

Healthfest

As a demonstration of healthcare support and community spirit, the telco organised Healthfest – a free medical screening event for a wide range of health checks such as blood pressure, blood sugar, malaria, hepatitis B, HIV, typhoid, weight and general health consultations in the bustling streets of K.O. Freeman in Ashtown.

A total of 483 people received free medical screening and health advice based on the outcomes of the checks. The Foundation also facilitated the registration, replacement and renewal of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for 300 inhabitants of Kumasi.

For many residents like 53-year-old petty trader and mother of three, Naomi Antwi Agyei who couldn’t afford regular check-ups, Healthfest provided them with valuable insights into their medical conditions and how to take better care of themselves.

“I am always skeptical about health outreach programmes but attending today’s medical screening by Telecel Ghana Foundation has been very helpful. I never knew I had health conditions but now that I’m aware, I can take steps to manage them,” Mrs. Antwi Agyei said.

Healthfest was designed not only to provide immediate health checks but to also encourage people to embrace healthier lifestyles and seek treatment, if needed.

Homecoming

As Healthfest was in progress in Ashtown, about eleven kilometres in Atonsu, the Foundation was simultaneously organising Homecoming – an initiative to settle the outstanding debts of recovering patients burdened by medical expenses at the Kumasi South Hospital.

The Foundation covered the medical bills of about 15 indebted patients recovering from various health conditions including skin burns, auto accidents, surgeries, chest infections and birth complications, who were discharged to reunite with their families.

In addition, the Foundation donated medical supplies such as gloves, fetoscopes, bedsheets and toiletries to the mother and baby unit of the hospital, to equip maternal health officers in caring for expectant and nursing mothers. “The clearing of the treatment costs of patients and donation of medical supplies will make a huge difference. This gesture has empowered the hospital to work and save the lives of patients as well as deliver quality health care to those in need,” said Dr. Gyamfi Yeboah, Administrator for Kumasi South Government Hospital.

The Connected Health initiatives of Telecel Ghana Foundation during Ashanti Month are a testament to the power of community-driven healthcare. With Homecoming, the Foundation provided direct relief to individuals facing overwhelming medical expenses, while Healthfest ensured that the broader community had access to critical health screenings and education.

Head of Foundation, Sustainability and External Communications at Telecel Ghana, Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson said “We believe that everyone deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of their financial situation or socioeconomic background. With our Connected Health Initiatives, we are contributing to prime healthcare delivery and community health support for people and communities in Kumasi and other parts of the Ashanti Region.”

Two-year-old Richmond has both thighs bandaged as a result of hot soup pouring on his pelvic region in a kitchen accident. Recovering from the skin burns on his lower body, Richmond’s health condition is compounded by the inability of the family to pay his medical bills.

His dad, Kurt Asubonteng was grateful to the Foundation for coming to their aid. “This gesture from Telecel Foundation is a miracle for us. Although Richmond was ready to be discharged, we struggled to raise funds to clear his treatment bills. With Telecel Foundation coming to our aid, we can now go home as he heals from the burns,” Kurt said.
