She sometimes opened the housing of her guardian’s radio set and torchlight to figure out how they worked and reassembled them. The 12-year-old’s curiosity about the design and function of electronics has evolved into a dream to pursue creative design thinking as a career.

“I really love electronic appliances and enjoy looking deeper into what’s inside gadgets like watches and other appliances. I’m a creative person. I really like doing creative stuff and I’m interested in electronics,” the second-year junior high student of Nungua Methodist 1 Basic School, added.

Delali is one of 50 participants from the New Life Orphanage, Nungua and Osu Children’s Home who received practical Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) training that exposed them to experiments in robotics, programming, web design and arts, as part of Telecel Ghana Foundation’s Grow Girls in STEM initiative.

Brighter future

Hosted at the state-of-the-art STEAM Centre on the premises of the Accra Senior High School in collaboration with Asutem Robotics, the Telecel Ghana Foundation’s Grow Girls in STEM project is aimed at empowering and training young girls to explore and excel in STEM fields to compete in a world increasingly driven by technology and innovation. Since its inception in August 2023, over 150 young girls have received STEM empowerment and training in Accra and Takoradi.

After interacting with the young participants who were in different breakout sessions, Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, Head of Foundation, Sustainability and External Communications at Telecel Ghana, said, “We believe the future of STEM is brighter with a diverse range of brilliant minds. That’s why we’re proud that our Grow Girls in STEM initiative is empowering young girls to explore their passion for science, technology, engineering, arts and math, a critical step to becoming the next generation of innovators who will create solutions.”

Two heads are better than one

In the STEM workshop, Delali and her teammates are busy creating their own visual story using Scratch, a simple programming software for producing interactive stories, games, and animations. She calls out to the programming instructor to help with any difficulties that arise as they use the software.

“I found it easy and fun to move the sprites from left to right. It is a very educative and important skill. I also learnt about teamwork because two heads are better than one. It’s better that a group of people come together to learn because it’s much easier than when only you are doing it.”

How Telecel Ghana Foundation is shaping the future of girls in STEM

Obo-Nai said the telecommunications industry was the backbone of the global digital infrastructure therefore, deploying AI to fast-track service delivery, improve customer experience, and staying ahead of the curve was key to the survival of the industry and the country.

Sharing practical examples of how Telecel Ghana had embraced AI head-on, she said fostering a culture of digital awareness and prioritising agile working culture within Telecel had helped to embed advanced digital technology across its operations.

Ing. Obo-Nai also championed cross-sector collaborations as a means of harnessing AI’s potential to drive broader economic growth.

She mentioned that one way of ensuring that AI becomes a benefit to the economy is to promote cross-sector collaborations such as the work Telecel Ghana is currently doing with the energy and extractive sector to digitise utility monitoring, remote asset checking and real-time system maintenance among others.

She advised leaders to set ethical guardrails and institute policies to prevent the technology from being abused by navigating the complexities of regulatory frameworks, addressing concerns surrounding data privacy and security, and ensuring that the benefits of AI are equitably distributed.

Telecel CEO Touts Artificial Intelligence

We are proud to support initiatives that breaks the silence and create a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.”

Dr. Amo-Mensah Adjoa Peprah, Senior Medical Officer, Department of Psychiatry at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, delivered a compelling speech on the correlation between menstrual hygiene and mental health.

She highlighted the psychological impacts of inadequate menstrual hygiene management.

“Mental health is intrinsically linked to our physical well-being. When young girls do not have access to proper menstrual hygiene products or face stigma and embarrassment around their periods, it can lead to significant stress, anxiety, and even depression. We must create an environment where girls feel supported and educated about their menstrual health.”

The event also featured educational sessions, workshops, and the distribution of menstrual hygiene products, aiming to empower young women with the knowledge and resources they need to manage their menstrual health effectively.

The Vice Chancellor of KNUST, Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, upon delegation from the Patron of Touching the Lives of Girls Foundation, Lady Julia Osei Tutu, praised the collaborative efforts of Telecel Ghana Foundation and Touching the Lives of Girls Foundation International.

She stated, “This initiative is a significant step towards ensuring that our young women have the necessary support and education to manage their menstrual health with dignity. By fostering an open dialogue and providing essential resources, we are paving the way for a healthier, more equitable future.”

The success of the World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2024 celebration at KNUST underscores the importance of continued advocacy and action to support menstrual health.

With ongoing efforts from organisations like Telecel Ghana Foundation and Touching the Lives of Girls Foundation International, the vision of a world where menstruation is managed without shame or stigma is becoming a reality.

Telecel Ghana Foundation commemorates Menstrual Hygiene Day at KNUST

Telecel Group, the phone carrier buying up assets in Africa, said it’s focusing on winning over market share in Ghana, which could become a key to the company’s expansion in the region. Telecel, which entered Ghana last year when it bought the business from Vodafone Group Plc, is going to focus on building out its fintech offering and will target underserved parts of the population, Chief Executive Officer Moh Damush said in an interview in Accra. Ghana’s the largest market where Telecel operates and has a data-hungry market with good growth potential, he said. “We believe Ghana could be an excellent hub to serve surrounding markets,” Damush said. “There could be chances to expand in the Central African region, but at this time the company’s growth strategy is focused on West Africa.”

It’s competing with MTN Group. The South African telecom is
Africa’s biggest wireless carrier by revenue and is particularly
dominant in Ghana, a West African country with 33 million people and as many mobile-phone voice subscriptions. The Johannesburg-based operator has 72% of the market for voice service and 79% of data subscriptions, according to a report last year from the National Communications Authority. Telecel Ghana trails with 19% and 13% for voice and data respectively and a smaller thirdcarrier, AT, has the rest. The country’s telecommunications regulator has tried to loosen MTN’s grip by fixing a price floor and preventing promotions. Still, local competitors have struggled to match the South African operator’s network investments. “A big challenge is that new investors will have to spend a lot of money on their infrastructure,” said Sam Aluko, a partner at KPMG in Ghana.

While MTN had 2,000 more 4G towers than Vodafone Ghana when Telecel acquired the company, Telecel has added another 500 sites in the last year, Damush said. The government owns a 30% share in Telecel’s Ghanian unit. The company will consider going public after it strengthens its market position, Damush said. For Telecel, winning market share in Ghana is part of a bigger push to take a bigger share of the continent, and the company has been snapping up assets across Africa. It entered Liberia in 2021 and is now working to complete
the acquisition of MTN units in Guinea-Bissau and Guinea to bolster its West African portfolio. Further south, it has operations in the Central African Republic and the Democratic
Republic of Congo.

To support its offering regionally, Telecel Group’s next round of acquisitions will be focused on fintech companies, Damush said. “These won’t necessary just be transactional fintech; we are also talking about micro-financing companies, micro-wealth management companies, micro-investment companies,” with an eye to integrating Telecel’s mobile-money service into these providers, he said

Over 1000 beneficiaries were offered free health screenings for ailments such as hypertension, blood sugar levels, malaria, Hepatitis B, etc.

During the final tour in Koforidua, over 500 people benefited from free screening, medical consultation, and free medication.

Augusta Andrews, the Acting Director for Legal and External Affairs at Telecel Ghana expressed her enthusiasm about the impact of the Healthfest, stating, “Seeing such a strong turnout and positive response from the communities truly underscores the value of our Healthfest initiative. Our commitment to Ghana isn’t just about providing telecommunications; it is about creating tangible, positive changes in the everyday lives of our people. Seeing a child smile after getting the all-clear, or an elder relieved after a consultation, is what drive us. It is a testament to how businesses can and should play a role in the health and prosperity of the communities they serve”, she added.

Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, Foundation, Sustainability and External Communications Manager, highlighted the importance of such initiatives: she said, “In many communities, access to healthcare can be limited.
